For over a century—and more than 70 years in La Jolla—the Horst family behind Margaret’s the Couture Cleaner has dedicated itself to textile and leather preservation. What began as horse-and-buggy laundry routes in Ohio evolved into a premier national conservation studio led by President Chuck Horst and Chairman John Horst. Guided by nearly 100 artisans and conservators, the family views restoring America's tangible artifacts as a deep act of patriotism.
To honor the nation's upcoming 250th anniversary, Margaret’s released its America 250 Lookbook Centennial Edition, showcasing museum-quality restorations that protect historical craftsmanship without erasing authentic patina. Every project begins with detailed research, followed by tailored treatments to strengthen weakened fibers, nourish dried leather, and stabilize fragile stitching.
Highlighted restorations include a vintage 50-star American flag, carefully neutralized of damaging acidic stains to protect its aging fabric. Another featured item is a rare Cold War varsity jacket from the Strategic Air Command's Judo training program at Stead Air Force Base, complete with hand-crafted embroidery and original leather sleeves. Beyond military items, leather artisans restored an iconic Tiffany & Co. cantilevered leather executive travel case damaged by water and age, reconditioning its leather, reshaping the detached lid, and re-stitching it with period-correct linen thread.
Additional featured artifacts span World War II escape maps, a Coast Guard sweetheart pillow cover, a battle-worn M-1944 "Ike" field jacket, and Liza Minnelli’s emerald-green gown from New York, New York. Through meticulous care, Margaret’s ensures America’s shared history is preserved for future generations, one stitch at a time.
